The Symphony of Nature: Our Sound Algorithm

The Symphony of Nature: Our Sound Algorithm

This visit was no coincidence. Within the framework of the eTwinning Project "I Play, I Code" and our March activities—all focused on the environment and the "code of nature"—the "Symphony of Landscapes" served as the perfect introduction. It demonstrated that nature has its own rhythm and its own music.

Just as an orchestra "encodes" landscapes into musical notes, the children have now become the composers... composing:

Our Own Symphony of Nature

Objective: For children to create an acoustic path (a sound algorithm) using natural materials and their bodies.

1. Organization

We use hoops in the schoolyard. Each natural object placed inside a hoop corresponds not only to a movement but also to a specific sound.

2. The Sound Legend (The Key)

The children define the sounds for their own "symphony":

  • Straight Stick = The sound of the wind (“Fssssss!”)

  • Round Stone = The sound of flowing water (Tapping fingers on the palm: “splish-splash”)

  • Large Leaf = The rustling of trees (Rubbing palms together)

  • Pinecone = The chirping of birds (“Tweet-tweet!”)

3. Performance

The class is divided into two groups:

  • The Composers (Programmers): They place the objects in the hoops to create a path.

  • The Orchestra (Robots): The children walk through the hoops. As they step into a hoop, they must produce the corresponding sound.

The result: As the child traverses the path, a unique "Symphony of Nature" created by the children themselves resonates through the air!

Debugging: How do we check if it’s correct?

In this activity, we "debug" by ear:

  1. The teacher or a student holds the visual aid cards we created.

  2. If a child enters a hoop with a stick but makes a bird sound, the rest of the class shouts: “Wrong note!”

  3. We must stop, check the card, and correct the sound (the "code").

Recording

The teacher records the children’s "performance" of the path. Later, back in the classroom, the students listen to the recording with their eyes closed and imagine: What kind of landscape did they encode? A forest, a river, a mountain, or something else?
